Covid has already played a spoilsport in this edition of the most prestigious tennis event of the year, Wimbledon. On Monday, Grand Slam Champion and Former Wimbledon Finalist Marin Cilic pulled out of the tournament due to Covid. The latest casualty in this list is the 2021 Finalist and potentially a title contender, Italian Star Matteo Berrettini. The Italian Star posted an emotional post on his Instagram informing about his withdrawal from the tournament. "I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result". "I have no words to describe the extreme disappointed I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger"
In the buildup to this tournament, Berrettini won two prominent Grass-Court titles at Stuttgart and Queen's Club Championships, making him a big favorite to challenge reigning champion, Novak Djokovic, for the title. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be for this year. He was in the draw where a potential Semifinal meeting with 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal could have taken place. In Berrettini's absence, Swedish player Elis Ymer will feature in the main draw.
