Orange Cap is awarded to the highest run-getter in the IPL which is one of the main reasons behind the popularity of this league. Winning this cap is the dream of many players but it's not so easy to grab it as it demands prominent consistency. Twelve different players have managed to experience the joy of getting the Orange Cap in IPL in the last 15 seasons.
Let's discuss the names of Orange Cap winners of every edition of IPL :
IPL 2008 : SHAUN MARSH
The Orange Cap winner of the first IPL season was an uncapped player. Australia's Shaun Marsh made his National team appearance after the inaugural season of the IPL. He was 23 back then and must have felt extremely proud of himself to have won the famous Orange Cap in the first IPL edition in 2008. Kings XI Punjab picked up Marsh for INR 12 lakh through the draft system.
He scored 616 runs with the help of 59 fours and 26 maximums at an impressive average of 68.44 and strike rate of 139.68 in 11 matches in IPL 2008. Considering his performance in IPL, Marsh then got his maiden call for Australia.
IPL 2009 : MATTHEW HAYDEN
Australia's legendary batter Matthew Hayden has also won the Orange Cap in IPL. Hayden was picked up at the price of INR 1.56 crore by the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and he proved to be a successful buy for the yellow brigade. The opener smashed 572 runs at an average of 52 and strike rate of 144.81 in the 12 matches he played during the IPL 2009 season.
Being the highest run-getter in the tournament, he clinched the Orange Cap quite comfortably.
Hayden has 1107 runs to his name at an average of 36.9 and a strike rate of 137.52 in 32 IPL career games.
IPL 2010 : SACHIN TENDULKAR
The great Sachin Tendulkar had a consistent run during IPL 2010 season and played a vital role in MI's journey to the final of that season which they lost to Chennai Super Kings. Sachin scored 466 runs at an average of 47.53 and strike rate of 136.21 in 15 matches with the help of five half-centuries during the 2010 season. He has scored 2334 runs at an average of 34.83 in 78 IPL career matches.
IPL 2011 : CHRIS GAYLE
Chris Gayle remained unsold in the 2011 IPL auction but was picked as a replacement for injured Dirk Nannes by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gayle grabbed the opportunity with open arms and won the Orange Cap that year. He scored 608 runs with the help of three half-centuries and two centuries at a blistering average of 67.55 and strike rate of 183.13 in 12 matches during the IPL 2011 season. The Jamaican also holds the record of hitting the most sixes (357) in 142 matches he has played in the league.
IPL 2012 : CHRIS GAYLE
The Universe Boss continued his domination in the 2012 edition also and retained his Orange Cap for the second consecutive year. Gayle took on bowlers throughout the season and scored 733 runs at an outstanding average of 61.08 and strike rate of 160.74 in 15 matches which included 7 half-centuries and a century. The opener slammed 46 fours and 59 sixes in the 2012 IPL.
IPL 2013 : MICHAEL HUSSEY
Mr. Cricket Mike Hussey became part of this honored list in 2013 when he showed classic consistency throughout the season and went past the likes of Raina, Gayle, Kohli, and Rohit to clinch the Orange Cap. Hussey scored enormous 733 runs with the help of 6 half-centuries at an average of 52.35 in 17 matches during the 2013 season. His brilliant performance included 81 fours and 17 sixes. The Aussie batter has 15 half-centuries and a century to his name and has scored 1612 runs at an average of 38.76 in 59 IPL career matches.
IPL 2014 : ROBIN UTHAPPA
Kolkata Knight Riders had a magnificent run in IPL 2014 season and Robin Uthappa was the heavy contributor to their success as he ended up winning the Orange Cap.Uthappa scored 660 runs with the help of 5 half-centuries at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 137.78 in 16 matches. His consistency helped KKR in lifting the title that year. The right-handed batter was released by KKR in 2020 after long service and was picked by Rajasthan Royals where he struggled a lot. He then got a chance to be a part of CSK in 2021 and won the IPL title in his first year with the tournament giants.
IPL 2015 : DAVID WARNER
David Warner is one of the most successful batters in the world. His consistency and scoring ability in IPL is known to all. However, he took a long time to find the rhythm in this league and struggled a lot in a few early seasons. With the help of 7 half-centuries, Warner scored 562 runs at an average of 43.23 and a strike rate of 156.54 in 14 matches during the eighth season of the tournament. The opener was awarded with the Orange Cap in 2015 for his stellar run even though his team couldn't do much that year and finished sixth in the points table.
IPL 2016 : VIRAT KOHLI
Whenever there'll be any discussions over IPL anywhere, Virat Kohli's dream run in 2016 IPL will always be a highlighted and overpowered part of it. The kind of season he had that year just glued his brilliance in the minds of every cricket lover. Kohli smashed four remarkable centuries and scored an unmatched feat of 973 runs at an exceptional average of 81.08, a record which is yet to be broken. The former RCB captain lead his team to the final which they lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by just 8 runs.
IPL 2017 : DAVID WARNER
The Aussie opener showed his class again in 2017 and won the Orange Cap for the second time. He was at the peak of his potential and with the help of four half-centuries and a ton, he scored 641 runs at an average of 58.27 and strike rate of 141.81 in 14 matches during that season. Warner's best score was 126 and SRH finished third in the points table.
IPL 2018 : KANE WILLIAMSON
Due to the unavailability of regular captain David Warner, the leadership duties were handed over to Kane Williamson by SRH for the 2018 season who proved his worth straight away and clinched the Orange Cap. Kane had a phenomenal tournament with the bat and with the help of eight half-centuries and at an average of 52.50, he scored 735 runs in 17 matches he played. He also smashed 63 fours and 28 sixes during that season.
IPL 2019 : DAVID WARNER
Former SRH captain is the only player to have won Orange Cap thrice in the IPL history. David Warner reached this milestone in the 2019 season when he again set up an exhibition of runs with his bat. After being suspended from the tournament for two years due to the ball-tampering scandal, Warner made an inspirational comeback in the IPL and redeemed himself in style. On the strength of 8 half-centuries and a century, he scored 692 runs at an average of 69.20 in 12 matches in the 12th edition of the league.
IPL 2020 : KL RAHUL
India's KL Rahul is one of the most consistent batters in IPL at the moment but still has managed to win the Orange Cap only once in his IPL career which he did during the 2020 season. His team Punjab Kings' poor form overshadowed the skipper Rahul's effort and had a heartbreaking season. Rahul scored 670 runs which included five half-centuries and a century at an average of 55.83 and a strike rate of 129.34 that year. He recorded his best of 132* against RCB which remains the highest individual score by any IPL captain till now. KL Rahul has joined the tournament debutants Lucknow Super Giants as their skipper.
IPL 2021 : RUTURAJ GAIKWAD
Under the grooming process of MS Dhoni at Chennai Super Kings, young Ruturaj Gaikwad is one of the sparkling talents of Indian Cricket. He is only the second uncapped player to have won Orange Cap in IPL. Ruturaj was a key feature in CKS's title run in 2021 as he scored 635 runs at an average of 45.35 and strike rate of 136.26 in 16 matches during the 2021 IPL season. His stats included four half-centuries and a century. The right-handed batter got a maiden call for National Team soon after his ambitious performances in the tournament.
IPL 2022 : JOS BUTTLER
England's Jos Buttler sparkled his brilliance in IPL 2022 as he smacked four centuries and four half centuries. Buttler scored 863 runs with an appreciable average of 57.53 and strike rate of 149.05 in 17 matches to seize the famous Orange Cap. Courtesy to his performances, Rajasthan Royals the reached final which they lost to Gujarat Titans. The opener was also the player to hit most fours (83) and sixes (45) during the season and was adjudged as the 'Player of the Tournament'.
