Purple Cap Winners from IPL 2008 to 2022

T20 format is considered as a batsmen's game because batters take great advantage of the playing conditions and hit the bowlers fiercely. It is very difficult for a bowler to prove himself in this format of the game. There have been some bowlers in the history of IPL who have made their mark in this league of batsmen and have won the Purple Cap by taking the most wickets. Today, in this article, we will tell you about the purple cap-winning bowlers of all seasons of IPL.

IPL 2008 - Sohail Tanvir 

In the first season of IPL, Sohail Tanveer of Pakistan was playing for Rajasthan Royals and he won the Purple Cap in that season. Sohail Tanveer played a total of 11 matches in IPL 2008 in which he took 22 wickets at an excellent bowling average of 12.09. and his economy rate was 6.46.

 Sohail Tanveer also got the best bowling figures in that season as he took 6 wickets for just 14 runs in his 4 overs during a match against Chennai Super Kings. His superb bowling helped Rajasthan Royals to win the IPL 2008.

IPL 2009 - RP Singh

The second season of the IPL was played in South Africa, so there was a lot of help from the wicket for the fast bowling, taking full advantage of conditions Deccan Chargers fast bowler RP Singh won the Purple Cap in the 2009 season. He surprised the batsmen a lot in that season by swinging the ball both ways.

His brilliant bowling performance helped Deccan Chargers to become champion in that season. If we talk about the bowling figures of RP Singh in that season, he took 30 wickets in 16 matches, during which his economy rate was 6.98 while the bowling average was 18.13.

IPL 2010 - Pragyan Ojha

Another bowler of Deccan Chargers managed to win the purple cap for the second consecutive season. In 2010, Pragyan Ojha, a left-arm spinner playing for Deccan Chargers won the purple cap. The spin bowler bowled wonderfully throughout the season and trapped the batsmen in his spin.

Pragyan Ojha played a total of 16 matches for Deccan Chargers in that season in which he took 21 wickets at an economy rate of 7.29 and a bowling average of 20.42. If we talk about his overall IPL career, he took 89 wickets in 92 matches at a good economy rate of 7.37

IPL 2011 - Lasith Malinga 

Lasith Malinga is one of the best bowlers in IPL history. His stats in IPL are amazing. In the 2011 season, this fast bowler of Mumbai Indians won the Purple Cap. The batsmen had no answer for his brilliant yorker deliveries. Lasith Malinga played 16 matches in that season and took 28 wickets.

His economy rate was 5.95 while the bowling average was 13.39. Lasith Malinga played 122 matches in his entire IPL career in which he took 170 wickets at an economy rate of 7.14.

IPL 2012 - Morne Morkel

In 2012, South African fast bowler Morne Morkel was playing for Delhi Daredevils. Morne Morkel won the purple cap in that season. The fast bowler played a total of 16 matches in IPL 2012 in which he took 25 wickets at an economy rate of 7.19 and a bowling average of 18.12. Morne Morkel has played a total of 70 matches in the IPL, in which he had taken 77 wickets.

IPL 2013 - Dwayne Bravo

Dwayne Bravo is being retained by Chennai Super Kings for the last several years and the biggest reason for this is his wicket-taking ability every season. In the 2013 IPL, he mixed his pace and beat the batsmen a lot, due to which he became the Purple Cap winner in that season. 

If we talk about his bowling figures in IPL 2013, he took 32 wickets in 18 matches at an economy rate of 7.95 and bowling average of 15.53. He became the first IPL bowler to take more than 30 wickets in a season.

IPL 2014 - Mohit Sharma

Mohit Sharma performed well under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and won the purple cap in the IPL 2014. Batsmen were struggling against Mohit Sharma in that season. He played 16 matches in IPL 2014 season for MS Dhoni lead Chennai Super Kings. He took 23 wickets with an economy rate of 8.39 and a bowling average of 19.65

IPL 2015 - Dwayne Bravo 

As we told you earlier Dwayne Bravo consistently took wickets in IPL this was the reason that he won the purple cap for the second time in 2015. Death over specialist Bravo played 17 matches in 2015 and he took 26 wickets with an economy rate of 8.15 and a bowling average of 16.38. 

Because of his brilliant bowling and his consistent wicket-taking ability, he is the highest wicket-taker in the IPL history and he can also contribute with the bat for his team.

IPL 2016 - Bhuvneshwar Kumar 

Sunrisers Hyderabad was successful to win the IPL title in 2016 and the main reason for that is the bowling performance of Bhuvneshwar. He was brilliant in moving the ball both ways. If we talk about his bowling figures he took 23 wickets in 17 matches with an economy rate of 7.42. His bowling partnership with Mustafizur was outstanding in that season.

IPL 2017 - Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar was again brilliant with his bowling in the 2017 season. He was the first bowler to win IPL purple cap for the second consecutive season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar played 14 matches in IPL 2017 and he took 26 wickets with an economy rate of 7.05. He also got a five-wicket haul in that season.

IPL 2018 - Andrew Tye

Australian fast bowler Andrew Tye won the Purple cap in IPL 2018. He was playing for Kings XI Punjab in that season. Kings XI Punjab didn't perform well in that season but facing Andrew Tye was difficult for batters in that season. If we talk about his bowling figures in IPL 2018, he played 14 matches and took 24 wickets with an economy rate of 8.0.

IPL 2019 - Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir has been one of the best spinners in IPL history. He troubled the batsmen with his leg-spin bowling and won the purple cap in IPL 2019. Imran Tahir took 26 wickets in 17 matches while he was playing for Chennai Super Kings with an impressive bowling economy of 6.69.

IPL 2020 - Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada is one of the best fast bowlers at the moment. He won the Purple cap in IPL 2020 while playing for Delhi Capitals. Kagiso Rabada played 17 matches in IPL 2020 and he took 30 wickets with an economy rate of 8.34. His magnificent bowling performance helped Delhi Capitals to reach the final of IPL 2020.

IPL 2021 - Harshal Patel 

Harshal Patel took many wickets by mixing up his pace and won the Purple cap. For the first time in IPL history, an uncapped player has won the Purple Cap. Harshal played 15 matches in IPL 2021 season and he took 32 wickets with an economy rate of 8.14. He also got a five-wicket haul in that season.

IPL 2022 - Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal bowled brilliantly in IPL 2022. He mixed his spin bowling with variations. His magnificent bowling helped Rajasthan to reach the IPL Final. Chahal played 17 matches in IPL 2022 season and took 27 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.75. He also got a five-wicket haul in that season.
